About London

For the firsttime visitors the best advice I can offer when visiting London is to prioritize what you want to see and do. This is because London simply cannot be covered in a matter of days. Trying to cover too much ground in one go will leave visitors feeling exhausted. Many tourists to London are repeat visitors and for good reason too. London’s entertainment and leisure scene is incredibly diverse. There is a great many things to do in London and there are many great sights and experiences in store for tourists.

The London experience is a rich assortment of English culture history and the arts. Get photographed against some of the world’s most historic architecture such as the Tower of London or the houses of Parliament St. Paul’s Cathedral or Westminster Cathedral. For modern architecture how about The London Eye or The O2? Indulge in some history or art education at the British Museum or the Natural History Museum or visit the Tate Modern for contemporary art or the National Gallery for a wide collection of European art. Or you could rub shoulders with who’s who of a who in History at the world famous wax museum of Madame Tussauds. Stroll through the internationally acclaimed Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew or take a literary journey at the excellent Shakespeare Globe. For a taste of English culture and royalty there is the changing of the keys ceremony at the Tower of London or you could watch the changing of guards at Buckingham Palace where there is a chance of meeting the Queen or the Royal Family in person! The State Rooms of the Buckingham Palace are open to visitors in August and September each year. A good way to experience London is to go for one of London’s walks which are featured walks around places of interest conducted by the locals who will entertain you with their animated stories.

Come nightfall the entertainment and leisure scene is astounding. London’s restaurant scene is staggering with the rise of British and Londonbased celebrity chefs and their restaurants to smaller and more intimate restaurants offering a remarkable range of cuisines. If bars and clubbing is not quite your idea of a great night out perhaps a night at the theatre or concert might appeal to you. London is also home to many internationally acclaimed arts groups and each season they offer a wide range of theatrical or arts productions. Popular musicals such as Les Miserables The Lion King Phantom of the Opera Mamma Mia! and so on are mainstay offerings for tourists in search for some night entertainment. There are also other music and dance performances available at different clusters. While the West end is renowned for its popular culture afterdinner scene the South Bank Center is home to the National Theatre Hayward Gallery and Royal Festival Hall and there is a range of dance theatre and music performances available throughout the year. The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden offers ballet and opera while Sadler’s Wells is a dance and music venue.

One beauty about London is that it is constantly reinventing itself in terms of its entertainment and leisure scene making London a wonderful destination to visit any time of the year and certainly worth visiting and revisiting during different times of the year. In March each year there are the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Races along the River Thames. In June/July there is the annual Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships. In September more than 600 public landmarks are open for the public at no cost during the Open House Weekend.

Aberdeen Airport Vital To Scotland And The Oil Industry

The area of Dyce an area located approximately five miles from the centre of Aberdeen is the location of the city’s servicing airport. While it is not the largest of the UK’s airports passenger numbers are steadily on the increase and have been for the last decade. At the moment the airport sees around three and a half million passengers pass through annually this number is eight percent higher than the previous year and hence shows the level of growth for the site.

In terms of Scotland Aberdeen is regarded to be the third largest airport meaning that it is of vital importance to the air travel network in Britain. The British Airports Authority owns the site and over the years has worked hard to improve the facilities in the terminal; this has meant allowing shops restaurants and car hire desks to trade within the terminal building. As well as aeroplane flights Aberdeen plays a major role in servicing the needs of the North Sea oil industry.

In the early thirties the airport was opened with the goal of providing a link between the northern Scottish islands and major airports such as London’s Heathrow and Gatwick. This role however was taken over by Inverness due to a more preferential and northerly location. As with most UK airports Aberdeen was requisitioned by the military during the war years and played an important role in the protection of northern Britain. Fundamentally the role of Aberdeen was to protect the north from German bombing raids originating from Norway. Even with this ultimately important role the airport predominantly flew reconnaissance sorties in Scandinavia to assess the state of the war effort. After military control was ended the site returned to civil aviation uses.

Aberdeen was in a prime position to take advantage of the North Sea oil boom during the sixties. This meant helicopters were regularly flown from the site’s heliport to ferry workers to the numerous oil rigs in the North Sea. The role continues to this day and currently Aberdeen is regarded to be the busiest Heliport anywhere in the world. These flights form a large constituent of the airport’s income; around five hundred oil industry workers use the airport annually while around forty thousand flight movements were controlled from the site. This role is so important to the airport that it is estimated that over half of the movements at any one time are made up from helicopters.

As well as this vital function servicing the needs of the oil industry Aberdeen has increasingly attempting to court business from budget airlines to increase destinations to Europe. This increased tourist focus has meant that shops cafes and car hire provisions have been expanded to meet the needs of travellers. Additionally to service both oil rig customers and tourists a number of hotels have been built to accommodate travellers. One of these is rumoured to be part of the Hilton chain showing that not all those flying to the oil rigs are blue collar workers; plenty of executives also regularly make the journey.

As a result of government legislation Aberdeen has had to put down in writing its plans for development over the next thirty years. The executives at the airport are hoping to extend the runway by around three hundred metres. This extension if given planning permission will give the airport facilities to land flights from America a vital link for many of the oil industry players. The extension however will not just bring transatlantic flights it is also hoped a larger runway will mean European destinations further afield will become a reality.

As with many of the airports in the UK local residents are vehement that expansion should not happen in their back yard; additionally environmental campaigners have also voiced protestations. These protests however are likely to be overruled should planning permission be given. Whatever happens with the expansion plans the airport will continue to perform an important function in servicing both the Scottish nation and the oil industry.

About the writer: Air travel expert Thomas Pretty looks at how car hire Aberdeen airport services have been instrumental in the site’s development.

Zhitomir A City Built On The Past And Embracing The Present And Preparing For The Future

Zhytomyr or Zhitomir is a historic city in western Ukraine. It is the administrative center of the Zhytomyr Oblast province as well as the administrative center of the surrounding Zhytomyrsky Raion district. The city itself is also designated as its own separate raion within the oblast occupying an area of 65 km. The current estimated population is 291000 as of 2005. The city is around 125 km west of the capital in Ukraine Kiev.
Zhytomyr is a major transportation hub. The city lies on a historic route linking the city of Kiev with the west through Brest. Today it links Warsaw with Kiev Minsk with Izmail and several major cities of Ukraine. Zhytomyr was also the location of Ozernoye a key Cold War strategic aircraft base located 11 km southeast of the city.
Zhytomyr was allegedly established in the 8th century by Zhytomyr prince of a Slavic tribe of Drevlians.
Zhytomyr apparently had few Jews at the time of the Khmelnytsky Uprising 1648 but by the time it became part of Russia in 1778 it had a large Jewish community and was a center of the Hasidic movement. Jews formed nearly a third of the 1861 population 13299 of 40564; thirty years later they had somewhat outpaced the general growth of the city with 24062 Jews in a total population of 69785. By 1891 there were three large synagogues and 46 smaller batte hamidrashot. The proportion of Jews was much lower in the surrounding district of Zhytomyr outside the city; at the turn of the century ca. 1900 there were 22636 Jews in a total population of 281378.
The city is located on the shore of the Teteriv River. It is an industrial cultural and educational center. Surrounded on all sides by an ancient forest the city boasts a diversified economy ranging from lumber milling and agriculture to food processing and metal working. One of the more unique industries in Zhitomir is the manufacture of musical instruments.
An ancient Slavic town the first record of Zhytomyr was chronicled when the city was sacked in 1240 by the Mongol hordes of Batu Khan. The city subsequently passed into the hands of the Lithuanians 1320 then the Poles 1569 before being assimilated into the Russian Empire in 1793.
Zhitomir truly is a unique travel destination. Located in a picturesque natural setting it offers a little bit of everything. Whether you venture into the surrounding hills and forest or try to lose yourself in the city’s beautiful parks and public squares you will find a sense of tranquility not found in Ukraine’s larger cities.
Zhitomir has agricultural and teachertraining institutes. A lot of outstanding personalities were born in Zhitomir: writer V.G.Korolenko pianist S.T.Rihter space researcher and engineer S.P.Korolyov. A famous Russian writer A.I.Kuprin lived in Zhitomir. V.V.Mayakovsky visited Zhitomir in 1928.
The easiest way to get to the city is to first fly to Borispol in Kiev and take either a taxi around 150 USD or the train from Kiev around 20 USD. You can also enter Ukraine at other airports and you will very easy find train connections to the city as it is a hub for trains in the country.
The city has several hotels although the standard is not high but nice rooms are available for a cheap price around 50 USD pr night.
Several sights are available to the visitor of Zhitomir such as; the Zhitomir Regional Library Museum of local lore Ethnographic museum Palace of Justice Former communist party comitee headquarters Preobrazheshskiy Cathedral Zhitomir Municipal building city philharmonic in the old theatre water tower Franko University Museum of Cosmonautics Gagarin Park and the Korolyov Space museum are some of the things you can see here.
Main sights in Zhitomirskya oblast are: monastery of barefooted Carmelites dated by XVIII century in . Berdichev city Preobrazhensky cathedral RomanCatholic church of Saint Sophia Mikhalovskaya church in Zhitomir memorial museum of Lesya Ukrainka in NovogradVolynskiy

The city has several good restaurants offering local cousine as well as western European cousine.

You And A Canoe

At Snook Haven Florida little has but changed but the faces and styles; all that remain of a day from our past. If you sit back you can still hear Johnny Weissmuller ordering a cold can of brew from over the bar back. Old style pictures still hang at crooked angles and if you listen carefully ignoring the hustle and bustle of the modern world down the road you will hear a raptors cry as Marlene orders the same waiting from a break in the rain before filming again begins with Revenge of the Killer Turtles 1947. As an old Florida bayoustyle restaurant and pleasantly primitive entertainment venue Snook Haven Restaurant amp; Fish Camp has been a fixture in Venice for more than 50 years. Even before that anglers traversing the fishfilled waters of the Myakka River in the early 1900s camped in the area. Used as everything from fish camp to fish house this journey back into time is well worth the time to visit. Back when I first moved to Venice Florida Snook Haven is where I set up my head quarters and rendezvous for ReelnFish Charters. Running clients up the river for a chance to mingle with our Florida wildlife and catch Bass to freshwater Channel Catfish. Big cats in the twentypound plus range on light tackle to cane poles. Camping on the banks or overnight packins. moving down stream we would catch everything from Snook to Reds and if the tides are right you can catch Bull sharks on one side of the river and Bass on the other along with an occasional Blue crab too. Now retired to angling and writing about it instead I enjoy my visits back where Tarzan slept lazily along an out stretched branch of a giant oak draped with Spanish moss beyond the restaurant’s waterfront back deck. There one can find a canoe tucked between a fleet canoes to kayaks loosely tied to the aging dock. Here you can elect to explore the slowmoving waters by powerboat or as Snook Haven’s slogan states “You and a Canoe” paradise to me! In the canoe the river is yours at eye level with the crocks the beauty is bountiful. One and a half hours at fifteen dollars is a steal of a deal for either a canoe or kayak with all safety equipment provided. If you own a boat of 17 feet or small you may use their boat ramp at a reasonable charge of five dollars plus tax. The boat launch is closed because of the crowds and live bands on Saturdays amp; Sundays between 116 and on Thursday between 83and the rest of the time restricted to dawn to dusk exclusively!

Once the haunts of the King Elvis and Senator Kennedy before he was President and twice visited by President Regan and Bush Sr. Snook Haven is a rendezvous with the past on the sundappled shores of the winding Myakka River in Venice. Think giant oaks draped with Spanish moss graceful cabbage palms and teacolored waters flowing by. Two movies have been filmed there the most famous a Tarzan flick called Revenge of the Killer Turtles. On Thursdays the public is invited to hear the Gulf Coast Banjo Society practice from 11 a.m.2 p.m. and every Sunday the place overflows with weekend bikers and other regulars who gather round the shaded outdoor picnic tables to listen to live music. For overnight stays you can bring your own RV or rent one of the fully furnished cabins. Call first though as many are undergoing renovation. Snook Haven also offers guided pontoon boat charters up and down the Myakka River. Bring a camera; 1 November afternoon one of the largest alligators the boat captain said he has ever seen charged the charter and dove straight under. Even grown men shrieked. However the boat also meanders down some spectacularly scenic stretches of pristine countyowned lands that will never be developed. River tours are available Wednesday through Sunday. You can eat indoors or dine outside at a wooden table overlooking the river. Lunch is served from 11 a.m.4 p.m.; dinner runs from 49 p.m. seven days a week. Specialties include gator bites of course! and grouper fried grilled or blackened. Try it stuffed with crab or with the shrimp and clam platter. December when the early mornings and evening are cool is a splendid time of year for this experience. Bring bug spray as the mosquitoes can be vicious.

About 10m/30ft from the beach the wall drops to 680m/2200ft. Since 2005 the island is a marine park and is protected from dynamite fishermen and over diving by the Malaysian Navy and Sabah Parks officials. Divers must stay on close by Mabul or take day trips from the coast town of Semporna.

For such a wonderful dive site you would expect premium prices but Sipadan is surprisingly accessible for those on a shoestring budget. Get yourself to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore and follow the tips below for a unforgettable dive holiday without breaking the bank.

Book your international flight to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore and then get yourself to Semporna via Tawau.

How to get from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau

Book a flight from KL to Tawau with Air Asia for around RM200 plus taxes.

Air Asia leaves from the Kuala Lumpur LCCT which stands for Low Cost Carrier Terminal. Its about 10km from the main international terminals. Follow the signs from arrivals to the car park and you will find the bus station and a transfer bus for RM1.50. It takes around 15 mins but leave some time to spare.

Air Asia are very strict about excess baggage and its expensive but they are very friendly to scuba divers. Pack your gear separately and identify it when you check in and you will pay maximum of RM30.

How to get from Singapore to Tawau

Book a flight from Johor Bahru to Tawau with Air Asia for around RM200 plus taxes.

Johor Bahru is the Malaysian town across the causeway from Singapore. After you land take the train into town and then a bus from Queen Street bus station to Malaysia! Total cost less than S5. You will need to get a taxi to Johor Bahru airport also called Senai airport because the buses are difficult to find but this should only cost you RM20 or so.

How to get from Tawau to Semporna

All day boats to Sipadan and transfers to Mabul resorts start in Semporna a fishing town 100km from Tawau. The diving day and resort transfers start early so it is better to go direct to Semporna when you arrive.

Leaving Tawau airport you have two options. The bus ticket counter will sell you a ticket to Tawau RM10 and direct you to the bus behind the police station. Tawau town is 30km from the airport south. Semporna is 70km north. If you go to Tawau first you will have to retrace 30km on your second bus before getting closer to your destination.

So before you buy your ticket to Tawau go and look behind the police station. You will likely find a mini bus going direct to Semporna and they charge only RM20. Save yourself two hours and RM20 and go direct!

If you are tired late or fancy splashing out a taxi costs around RM100 and will fit up to 3 tired divers and their gear!

You could save yourself all that hassle by booking diving ahead. Most dive resorts will come and collect you if you book ahead.

So when you get to Semporna what are your options to dive on Sipadan? Surprisingly you can do day trips from Semporna or stay on an island resort for much the same price so you choose for other reasons.

If you want to enjoy the relative freedom of staying the mainland so you can go shopping and choose your restaurant in the evening then your cost is longer boat times to the days diving. If you want to get away and take advantage of unlimited diving and short boat trips then you must book several consecutive diving days and stay allin on an island resort.

Staying in Semporna and having day trips

Scuba Junkies are probably the largest day tripper from Semporna website offline at publication date. For smaller boat groups you might try Blue Sea Divers who opened this summer and are a couple of doors down the road.

Staying on the island resorts

Many of the resorts on Mabul and Kapalai are expensive but there are budget options. The cheapest is definitely Uncle Changs Sipadan Mabul Dive Lodge. Its very basic mattresses on the floor and shared bathing but you go to the islands for the diving and the resort for rum party evenings not to catch up on your sleep.

For a little more money you could try something totally different and take a room on the converted oil rig called SeaVentures. This offers you the opportunity for unlimited diving under the rig with your buddy which makes it all great value. You also have more chance of getting some sleep on the rig!

Staying in Semporna

Whether its one night before a resort transfer or several days and day trip diving your best option in Semporna is Scuba Junkies backpackers lodge. They have beds for as little as RM20 per night and that includes breakfast.

You might be tempted to go a little upmarket to City Inn or Dragon Inn hotels where you will an ensuite room but watch out these do not include breakfast nor offer any refreshment services at all.

Sipadan is not the only diving destination in Sabah. Why not spend a few days in the state capital and discover the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park just half an hour from the town jetty.

Kota Kinabalu is a very easy town to spend a few days in. There are many backpackers but for sure the classiest is Velvet which opened early 2007. The rooms are immaculate and they offer free use of the washing machine! You can go white water rafting submerge yourself in sulphur baths or for the more adventurous you can climb the mountain.

T.A.R. marine park has a range of diving including several artificial reefs close to the islands which are very successful in attracting a range of fish. You can see some spectacular marine life even when the visibility is low when compared to Sipadan. While several dive centers operate in Kota Kinabalu we found the customer service of Sabah Divers to be second to none and at a very good price.

Woody Point Lighthouse

Stability and Light. I have long been fascinated with lighthouses. Despite their robust structure lighthouses are indispensable to sailors and travelers. Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines and shoals. They enable the safe entry as well as exits to harbors. Somehow I feel safe just looking at lighthouses. They seem very sturdy and stable. Even if the weather condition is pretty bad lighthouses shine like some precious gem amidst the dark horizon. Lighthouses seem unaffected by the strong waves and thunderous wind.

My earliest recollection of lighthouses was when my parents took me to this picturesque lighthouse south of Bonne Bay. We drove hours and hours to get to this amiable town and then traveled some more to reach the spot. There was nothing peculiar about this particular lighthouse. Aside from being fairly smaller than the other lighthouses I have seen nothing is different about it. But the Woody Point Lighthouse is some of the most beautiful structures I have seen.

The roofs are cherryred the walls pristine white. It looks more like a generous serving of vanilla ice cream topped with ripe cherry. Built in 1959 this 20 feet lighthouse is still in used until now. The Woody Point Lighthouse is one of the historic landscapes of Newfoundland. The view from the lighthouse is astonishing almost surreal. Behold the glorious sea the quaintly shaped clouds and the green mountain. The best spot in the lighthouse is up. You feel the cool breeze caressing you; the sun warming you all over.

It was spring the day we first visited Woody Point. The flowers were blooming happily the trees lush green. I remember the laughter of the beefy man on the supply store the warm smile of the old lady by the street. Most of all I remember the happiness I experienced as I gaze into this simple structure. I have been eyeing it since we arrived at the town first out of curiosity then out of awe. It is not one of those mementos that feel dull without meaning. The lighthouse holds history and security.

Ten years since my first visit to Woody Point I am here once again enjoying the scenery taking my fill of its rich history visiting great places and indulging in fun activities. Some things have changed in the town. Some stores I used to go to are closed now there are also new ones already established. Nonetheless one thing is still the same and that is the sturdy Woody Point Lighthouse.

Wild Wadi Water Park In Dubai

Dubai is home to some amazing architecture and it is where visions of the future are being brought into the present with ground breaking designs popping up all over the city. Perhaps most spectacular of all Dubais attractions though is the Wild Wadi water park and this is why

Dubai is hot very hot! Temperatures between June and September soar to over 45C and even the sea temperature hits 40C during this period. Add this to the fact that between May and October it would be very unusual to see a rain drop and even during the cooler part of the year it only sees perhaps an average of 15mm a month as an absolute maximum. This leaves you wandering where all the fresh water could possible come from and how it keeps being replenished given the high evaporation rates!

Well it is perhaps the most sophisticated water park ever made. Set over 12acres of what was previously a desert the Wild Wadi provides families and thrill seekers with an oasis in which to take refuge during the heat of the day if your idea of a refuge is a 33m freefall reaching reaching 50 miles per hour! The park takes the form of an Arabian Wadi which is basically an oasis and it follows a Juha theme which is a character from Arabian folklore and gives the park that true Theme park feel which really brings it all together nicely.

If you are an adrenaline junkie like me youll be pleased to note that the park features some of the tallest and fastest water rides in the world with 24 state of the art rides tailor made for thrill seekers. These include the Jumeirah Sceirah a 33m freefall slide mentioned earlier the many Master Blasters which are effectively water baseds rollercoasters which propel you around using powerful jets the traditional Ring Slides which are a consistent favourite amongst children and adults alike and much more besides this.

All in all it is well worth a visit and other than the luxury of an air conditioned living area the park provides an alternative method of relief from the sweltering heat!

Why Are All Of Puerto Vallartas Bougainvillea Flowers White?

Bougainvillea a strikingly beautiful plant seen in abundance in Puerto Vallarta Mexico derived its name from Louis Antoine de Bougainvillea an admiral in the French Navy that encountered these plants in Brazil in 1768 and described their beauty to his fellow Europeans when he returned home.

Bougainvilleas are rapid growing plants that produce white flowers year round in sunny warm climates and Vallarta perfectly meets their requirements by providing approximately 320 sunny days per year with an average annual temperature of 78F. Being deciduous they do fine without much watering during the seven month dry season in Vallarta from November through May when there is virtually no rain. As thorny vines they seem content growing up horizontal or even hanging down and can reach out or up almost 40 feet.

It’s almost impossible to go anywhere in Vallarta without seeing bougainvilleas growing profusely. They are everywhere along the roadside can be spotted on the Sierra Madre hillsides act as potted plants or serve as ornamental shrubs around almost every casita and villa are all over the golf courses and are around all public areas of interest. Bougainvilleas can be seen hanging over walls from terraces and from window sills in every Vallarta neighborhood. Because they are so dense with foliage and prickly thorns they are ideal for and routinely used as colorful hedges along walkways and between lots.

Now we ask if all their flowers are white why are these plants so beautiful and colorful? The answer is that it’s not their flowers that have drawn our attention it’s their bracts! All bougainvilleas have small white trumpet shaped flowers in clusters of three surrounded by three or six brightly colored bracts. These bracts are actually modified or specialized leaves generally slightly smaller than the green foliage leaves and their purpose is to attract pollinators. In the case of bougainvilleas these bracts can be pink magenta purple red orange yellow white or a combination of colors. Poinsettia is another example of a beautiful plant where the bright red color that we’re familiar with at Christmas time is actually the Poinsettia bract and not a flower.

In Vallarta there are numerous tours that are taken on a daily basis by thousands of cruise boat passengers and other visitors. They include Safari tours Canopy tours Jungle tours City tours etc. all of which have many beautiful sights to see with “photo ops” galore. One common “photo op” that can be seen on all these tours is the dramatic sight of Bougainvilleas near every subject of interest.

Another tour where Bougainvilleas can be seen at every turn in the road is the Home tour where visitors are escorted through selected homes in Vallarta’s finest neighborhoods. The cobblestone roads white and pastel colored villas with their red tile roofs the incredible hillside views of the city and Banderas Bay and of course the magnificent tropical foliage with Bougainvilleas around almost every home provide these tourists with a day full of unforgettable sights.

Puerto Vallarta currently has seven world class golf courses with the construction of an eighth course near completion. Three additional courses are on the drawing board and will probably be built during the next five years. They are all magnificently manicured courses some rolling throughout the foothills of the Sierra Madres others along the shore of Banderas Bay or the Pacific Ocean. Aside from having absolutely perfect weather conditions for golf for eight months of the year these courses have one other thing in common; they are all beautifully adorned with strategically positioned Bougainvilleas. Typically when visitors play the golf courses around Vallarta they will take a number of photographs of the scenery and it will invariably include Bougainvilleas. The standard comment is that it’s exactly what one would expect to find in Paradise! Of course their comments may differ a bit immediately after spraying a tee shot out of the fairway and into one of the magnificent Bougainvillea bushes with their thorny branches and profusion of bracts and leaves hanging down to the ground making their ball virtually irretrievable!

Included with the gorgeous and infinitely differing evening sunsets the Guadalupe Church the sand sculptures on the beach and the bronze sculptures on the malecon the colorful Bougainvillea bracts are among the most photographed topics in Vallarta. If you bring a camera to this tropical Paradise make sure you’ve got plenty of spare memory or film because it’s quite easy to get carried away taking pictures before you’ve seen it all!

If you’re fortunate enough to be one of the 50000 North Americans living here the next time a visitor to the area comments on all the beautiful Bougainvillea flowers you can be a real smart aleck by informing them that what they’re admiring are actually bracts; that all Bougainvillea flowers are white!
